MW Crashing/Freezing - fixed

I was recently experiencing several crashes/freezes per day. It would start with slow mouse response, and then a few minutes later, MW would just freeze up. All other programs would continue to work fine. Shutting down MW (via Task Manager) and restarting it, without having to reboot the computer, would work for varying amounts of time before it would freeze again. No one else was saying anything about crashes here on the forum, and knowing how responsive the support group here is, I suspected it was just me but I didn't know what was the weak link.

My setup has 3 monitors running on 2 very old video cards (GTX 1050 and a GTX 650). Unrelated to the above, ASUS had an update for one of my video cards and included an app called GPU Tweak which I installed. Upon running GPU Tweak, I found that my GPU's were running at 100% capacity; which started me thinking - could MW be using the GPUs for part of its workload? And if so, were the old video cards the culprit.

GPU Tweak allows one to overclock the GPU's so I tried that - the number and frequency of crashes/freezes dropped significantly. This suggested the video cards were the problem so I began looking for a newer replacement that would handle all 3 of my monitors. As part of that process, I had to ensure that the candidate cards would fit my motherboard. When I looked closely at my current setup, I noticed the 1050 card was plugged into a 4x PCIE slot, and the 650 was plugged into the 16x slot.

Hmmmm..... what would happen if I put the more powerful card in the faster slot? Well, long story short, after swapping the cards, there have not been any more crashes/freezes of MW. I don't know what exactly has been fixed, but it seems like MW is using the GPU and there was a bottleneck in my system that has been fixed. I have let support know of my experience and they aren't exactly sure either as MW works through Java and it may have some embedded calls to a GPU, but it's not known it/when/how that would be done.

Based on my not finding someone else having this issue, it seems pretty rare, but maybe this post will help someone. If you're having an issue, my first suggestion (and lowest cost) would be try overclocking your GPU to see if that helps. If it does, then that suggests a similar bottleneck that might need an upgraded video card. In my case, the "upgrade" was to put the more capable card in the fastest slot. Had that not worked, I was looking to buy a rather expensive video card.

Hopefully this helps someone.

You are not the only one, i had this issue as well & i just didn't know it was stemming from MW, but what i did was to make sure my GPU on high performance. Then I added MW & another software to the graphics performance preference, making sure they were on the high performance setting. Once I did that all the lag stopped & my desktop works as if it is brand new again. I have a very stout desktop so i was confused for a while, which led me to upgrade the CPU & add more Ram. But if i would have done that from the start i would bet that i wouldn't of needed to upgrade anything. Thanks again for the post.

I'll clarify & say that my issue was lag & not crashing in case anyone is/ was having those issues.

I did overclocking of the Nvidia GeForce 960M on my old Dell XPS 15. This is done on Linux platform. It was awhile ago. It helped for fast moving markets. But one need to test it well to make sure just the right clock speed is chosen. I was able to get stable ~30% performance increase, measured by Geekbench OpenCL.

cheers.

Having similar issue/end result, that is, MW freezing up and requiring me to force quit it. Seemed that it usually occurred when an order was about to be executed which is extremely frustrating. I am not on a Windows system, though. I have a Mac M1 with Ventura. Any ideas where to start on this?

Best wishes!

Could be not enough RAM. The M1 CPU / GPU are more than capable to handle the MW.

cheers.
