Some weeks ago I posted No Charts for EUREX Bonds Futures.
Today is the roll-over day for many index futures and I found blank charts for most of these contracts on EUREX, CME and CBOT with similar error messages. The CQG datafeed is OK, as seen in DOMs.
I cleared out local data - no result, tried to roll-over manually - no result, manually Unadjusted - no result. Several MW restarts - no result. This problem is coming out near all roll-over dates with many contracts.
I don't have any problem with the hardware nor OS: everything was thoroughly checked and is up-to-date.
My setup for Continuous Contracts is 5 working days before expiry, Diff. Adjusted. I tried different parameters for individual contracts, but it doesn't make any difference - seems like this function is not working.
This is becoming really annoying, as regularly the software is unusable and I'm starting to wonder what have I paid 476USD for?

Here it comes again: expiry date for the EUREX index contracts.
I prepared a page with indexes forward contracts to front run the rollover issue. It was working fine yesterday and the day before, but today more than half of the charts (5 of 4) are blank , although data is visible in Watchlist, DOM and T&S. Manual roll-over attempts with various settings for Back Adjust Method failed and invoked error messages. Clear Local Data function doesn't work either. Adding contracts to Continuous Futures list doesn't make any difference.

FX and EUREX are my main contracts of interest. Here I'm stuck and fed up with MW. I can't literally use it. Roll-over on other platforms does work. From other threads in the Forum I see that this issue appears with other datafeeds other that CQG.

In my mind, this is not a malfunction of automatic rollover procedure, which would require a user to do it manually. This is a faulty product that freezes and becomes inoperable in parts for dozens of days a year with no way for the user to fix it. From a legal perspective, this is negligence on the part of the vendor to provide fully working software. It's not a free software provided "As-is". The vendor must deliver working product, or fix it ASAP and provide all users with relative patch.

Just discovered that the charts for Globex Micro contracts, which expire today, but still active, are also blank. All contracts are set for Roll Method 5 Business Days Before Expiry Date, so in theory they should roll-over on opening of the page with charts. In reality they're blank, but the data is active as seen on the Watchlist.

Maybe a version of Java installed is interfering with MotiveWave, I know Motivewave runs on java so they might be fighting each other

Perhaps you right, but it's not a user problem. Java library is included in MW installation. Quick check of the Release notes reveals that Java version used in 6.9.. MW is not the latest.

On days of EUREX futures expiration, you'll be better off if you NOT touch that buggy MW software. Literally. Use something else, or take the day off. Cause otherwise you'll suffer lot's of frustration and nerves: whatever you try, you won't get a correct result. Even if you manage to push roll-over manually, your charts will move to some default setups, your analysis (templates) will disappear and most probably you'll see large gaps on charts between expired and current contracts or no historic data for expired contracts.

Attached is the look of my page from yesterday and today: I rolled EUREX indices futures that expire today manually, one contract - DD was set up as Continuous. I won't attach error messages, they are the same as with the previous cases.

The list of roll-over bugs, that I came across and other users have mentioned:

  • Automatic roll-over won't work regardless what you set up in Continuous Contracts - Preferences
  • Automatic roll-over won't work regardless what you set up in Edit Instrument - Data
  • If you roll a contract on expiration day manually it's not a given that your front contract will work next day
  • Roll All Charts/DOMS/T&S in manual Roll won't work fully, some charts remain on the previous contract
  • There is a broken matching link between expired and front contract, it's not only for EUREX, but some CME contracts as well
  • Charts will come out blank without any possibility to roll them manually, no price and time scales, error messages on attempt to change anything
  • DOM,T&S, Watchlist associated with frozen charts would work, meaning that tick data is coming to your system
  • For those contracts that you manage to roll manually, charts will move to some default setups, your templates (Analysis) will disappear, as they are related to expired contracts and you need to rebuild your templates
  • Gaps on rolled charts between expired and current contracts or no historic data for expired contracts
  • if there's a blank chart on charts page with several contracts, - any attempt to scroll, change timeframe on any chart will invoke error message related to the blank chart, that basically freezes the whole page
  • Clear Local Data for the frozen contract won't solve the problem
  • Clear All Local Data won't solve the problem
  • Deletion of the expired contract from Instruments list won't solve the problem, even worse - all your pages and charts related to deleted contract will be deleted as well
  • Continuous futures won't work
  • Some of futures contacts are missing from Continuous futures list, but it's not working anyway
The only good news is that probably I managed to find the work-around this annoying problem:
  • don't use Continuous Contracts
  • make a watchlist for your contracts with Expiry Date column, if you don't have it already
  • one day before expiration date roll everything due to expire manually
  • look through your charts to find any with previous contracts that have left over due to faulty Roll All Charts function and roll them to forward contracts manually
  • backup your system
  • rebuild all your affected templates
  • backup your system again
  • next day (roll-over day) if everything is working, do not restart your system till the end of the day - if you restart, ugly blank charts would come out again
  • if some ugly blank charts would come out - disconnect your MW system (in File). Ideally disconnect your computer internet connection. Restore from Backup 2. Reconnect (computer - if disconnected) MW to your datafeed. It should work - if not, repeat the above with the Backup 1 and rebuild all your templates
The above solution may sound clumsy, but so far it's the only remedy I found to have the MW system up and running next day. The other one is to ditch MW completely and save your time and nerves. BTW in comparison to others like NT8, Quantower, CQG M, CQG QT, MT5, SaxoTrader, IB WS, Volfix, Sierra - it is only Motivewave that is so buggy and frustrating when it comes to roll over.
