MotiveWave Issues on macOS

Hey all,

I have been encountering it on macOS. Initially, installation was a headache due to a Java version mismatch, but I got it sorted after updating Java. Recently, performance has been choppy with freezing during multi-chart use or intensive tasks like back-testing, disrupting my workflow.

Another concern is charting accuracy and indicator reliability. I have noticed delays in chart updates compared to real-time data and inconsistencies with technical indicators. Data feeds from brokers also intermittently drop out, impacting decision-making.

I have reached out to MotiveWave support about these issues, but response times have been slow. Any tips on faster resolutions or alternative support routes?
Lastly, does anyone have insights on macOS versions or hardware setups that work better with MotiveWave? Considering an upgrade but unsure if it'll address these issues.
I'm also checking these steps https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mh35727/mac/Alteryx but not resolve it.

Appreciate any help in streamlining MotiveWave for smoother trading and analysis.

Thanks in advance...:)

The MW platform comes with own Java VM, part of the install. I have never seen a conflict with whatever Java version is installed outside of the platform. MacOS comes with 2 flavors (Intel, Apple Silicon). I have M2 MAX with the latest MW - no issues whatsoever.

cheers.

Similar experience as @igor.s . I primarily use an iMac Pro (2017 - Intel Xeon W) that has never run into OS issues with MotiveWave. It's always been something else, most often due to data subscriptions. Once I had an issue related to a secondary monitor that overtaxed an old 2011 iMac.

I also have a MacBook Air M1 and have zero MW performance issues.

Hope you're able to get this worked out @mssmit !!!

I experienced a crash and multiple instances of motivewave freezing either while entering or being in a position. I am in touch with support about this will see what happens. I suspect it's related to Rithmic.

Bummer that you were in a position! I had a freeze happen once on a fast-moving futures position, and yes... mine too was 100% related to Rithmic.

Thanks for pitching in, Scotty. Have you experienced freezes or crashes with other data feeds / execution platforms? I have seen one of your earlier posts, where you explained you are also using IB and CQG. I am currently considering moving from Rithmic to CGQ and already have an IB + dxFeed workspace setup... hoping it would perform better!

I would also be interested to hear if anyone has experience with using the Trade Copier to execute trades via Rithmic + other platforms, but not actually using Rithmic data (assuming it's possible).

It's been a while since I've experienced a freeze or crash in MotiveWave. And since I've tried all the providers you mentioned, I can tell you my IB/CQG setup has been very reliable and the most const effective.

dxFeed was incredibly reliable, but the cost was substantial. I have no experience with Trade Copier.

I trade NQ only so CQG is more than enough for me. The historical data provided by MW servers work for me as well, no need for expensive data providers. All is quite reliable and works well on Apple Silicon platform.

cheers.

Where could I read more about MW's historical data?

I think you've already touched on this but historical data is not best for granular or most look back value, not exactly a Mac/java issue though. Might be a unique workstation or OS update issue as M1 Max have only heard/seen good performance from MW and Bookmap. MW runs fabulous on M3.

Was this resolved?

I have also been trialing Motivewave and have run into similar issues in replay mode. The price lags, candles are sometimes drawn a fraction later than the price position (I have a line across the whole chart, which sometimes skips a tick ahead). Placing sim orders also slightly glitches a bit sometimes too. Is this related to Java/system performance, or more to do with historic data or network performance? I’m on the road at the moment but planning on testing MW on Linux/Windows when I get back, to see if the performance is better. Such a shame, because aside from that I really like MW and I was hoping to find a decent broker independent desktop solution for macOS. I’m running an M1 Pro with 16GB.
